Negative Approach - S/T 7"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weGJ1kfUkkA

Old-school bare-bones hardcore that everybody should already know...Short, to the point, concrete slabs of songs..."NOTHING"

Cadillac Freeze - "So Vibratious" EP

http://cadillacfreeze.bandcamp.com/

Confident and funky hip hop thats both fun and strong without having any gangster pretense or overwhelming ignorance...Good stuff

Himsa - "Courting Tragedy and Disaster"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8FopIzE8Tc&list=ALBTKoXRg38BCkaMOJA23ekhr1Ni7d77LT

2000s metalcore from Washington state thats so much more boring and generic and put-together than I remember

Faith No More - "Angel Dust"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiyvw5AD-C8

Probably the best metal album of the 1990s if not of all time...I was fucking OBSESSED with this album last summer so much so that its like beaten to death for me but its still a classic..."Smaller and Smaller"/"Everything's Ruined"/"Kindergarten"/"Be Aggressive"

Mighty Mighty Bosstones - "Let's Face It"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeEnuPFRSdw&list=PL6570B1FFA5968967

This album has "The Impression That I Get" on it, the song that sent third-wave ska into a short mainstream focus. I think a lot of people see this band as like, not serious or something, but this is a very strong album about alcoholism and drug use and shit, and I listen to it more than any other ska album besides maybe stuff by The English Beat..."That Bug Bit Me"/"Never Mind Me"/"Break So Easily"...so good

Dystopia - "The Aftermath"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WJ2BvYA3As&list=PLXr6roSqjbmOSp3_lPpZZU_zwht14akuE

Almost debilitatingly negative and harsh but an absolute classic for metallic crust..."Population Birth Control"

Faith No More - "The Real Thing"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5sKgTMu7Gk

Why doesn't Mike Patton ever use this high-pitched voice anymore, or like ever after this album? The apex of funk-metal.

Love Anwar - "The Poppy Seed Patriot" EP

http://loveanwar.bandcamp.com/

Very good laid back beat music reminiscent of J Dilla

Suzy's Dead - S/T EP

http://susysower.bandcamp.com/album/suzys-dead

Very sloppy, shitty, whiny acoustic stuff

Black Flag - "What The..."

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/what-the/9348132

If this were a comeback album by The Freeze or Agent Orange or something itd be passable but it doesn't make sense as Black Flag...Too corny...11 of the 22 songs are okay but again, not really as Black Flag songs...

Apart - "A Bright and Clever Hell" EP

https://mayflyrecords.bandcamp.com/releases

Very good although a bit already-done screamo...I guess this is their final release and are already broken up

Radiohead - "The Bends"

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T7EzQvnA4DQ

One of my favorite albums ever...intuitively listenable but brimming with sadness and discomfort...perhaps their best

Palm Reader - "Unlucky" EP

http://palmreaderoc.bandcamp.com

Reverb-y OC garage indie...one of the songs in the middle is almost like a hardcore song though...this is alright

Circle Jerks - "Golden Shower Of Hits"

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/golden-shower-of-hits/311613

Classic 1983 California hc skate punk..the best album by this band by a long shot

Peachy Keene - "weightless in Wonder" mini-album

http://peachykeenemusic.bandcamp.com

Metric-style female-fronted indie...pretty but kinda boring

Knights Of The Abyss - "Juggernaut"

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/juggernaut/494920

One of the best bands the deathcore genre ever produced and this was their best album

Dubfound - 6-song demo

https://m.facebook.com/DubFound?id=291949585845&_rdr

Just terrible SoCal ska/reggae/punk about weed and alcohol and the sun and bullshit like that

Johnny Soul Dog & The Moon Barkers - "Pollen Pasture" demo

http://johnnysouldogandthemoonbarkers.bandcamp.com

Cool female-fronted punk that touches on Patti Smith, Melt-Banana and "Rapture"-esque rapping throughout the demo...cool stuff

Friday, December 20, 2013

And The Hero Fails - "Empire Smile"

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/empire-smile/246915

Good advanced metal core from the mis-2000s...I got this CD for free and never heard anything of the band like shows, mercy, anything like other bands with this sound were ubiquitous with but they're good...some catchy yet still technical stuff...I wonder what happened with them...Probably just a crowded marketplace

Daylight - "Jar"

http://daylightpa.bandcamp.com/album/jar

Pennsylvania-based grunge-inspired rock that sounds like it was from the 1990s, but more along the Foo Fighters/Everclear/(cringe)Chevelle post-flannel variety. Weezer-esque at times as well. Extremely listenable but also kinda boring

Mr. Bungle - S/T

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ_3F93hgZw

Debut album from carnival-funk-metal band that is just as bizarre and freaked out as it was in 1990..."The Girls Of Porn"

Vanna - "Curses"

http://youtu.be/UICKQ5g8-fg

The first full-length from this Boston metallic screamo band from a few years back...Real cool style that never lulls into stupid breakdowns or cheesy shit for too long of a period at any one point...Very AP but very good for what it is, definitely one of the best bands in their general scene

Los Olvidados - "Listen To This!!!"

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Listen+To+This/8823623

Classic SoCal skate-punk with rock n roll tinges that I actually enjoy more now than I did when I was all about this style

Carnifex - "Dead In My Arms"

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Dead+In+My+Arms/1664323

Inland Empire "deathcore" from the period when that style was at its peak...People always compared them to Suicide Silence like they weren't as good as them but I always disagreed...The guy who played bass in my old hardcore band for a very short while plays guitar in Carnifex now but this album was recorded long before then

We Still Dream - Summer 2011 Demo

http://westilldream1.bandcamp.com/

 * The link posted is the right band but not the same demo that I had listened to. I couldnt find a link to it. I'm sure you're all losing your minds considering I have soooo many followers on this blog

This is okay Set Your Goals-lite pop punk with chuggy parts from Florida...They cover a Lit song

Culture Abuse - "The Day Dreams Of Nothing" cassette

http://cultureabuse.bandcamp.com

Badass surfy/psychy heavy weird punk with a very cool effect on the second guitar....these guys love drugs

Downstaaiirs - "weeping/creeping" EP

http://downstaaiirs38.bandcamp.com

Very dark brooding but still aggressive ... Reminds me somehow of that band the pAper chAse

ttng - "13.0.0.0.0"

http://thistownneedsguns.bandcamp.com/album/130000

Extremely listenable math-rock with undeniable Minus The Bear influence; the singer sometimes sounds like the guy from Sparta

Sunday, December 15, 2013

Their/They're/There - "Curtain Call" EP

http://topshelfrecords.bandcamp.com/album/analog-weekend

Very catchy yet densely arranged emo rock with Minus The Bear-esque guitar flairs thrown in here and there...one of those EPs you definitely wish was longer

Drake - "Nothing Was The Same"

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BPwCd9vjO6E

Surprisingly deep at times, especially the loneliness in "Connect" and the disappointment in "Too Much"...'my uncle used to have all this shit on his bucket list and now he just accepts it that this is what life is. Fuck that shit." I literally kinda shed a young money tear at that one

Kanye West - "Yeezus"

http://m.youtube.com/watch?p=PL2yzbu-qbmiIGgX-0QDJOi0TZmFajKnyN&feature=plpp&v=VzbIAfh43Hg

Surprisingly good...strange in a way but also intuitive...I like this.

Sex Prisoner - "State Property" EP

http://badteethrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/sex-prisoner-state-property-e-p-btr-003

Badass hardcore that's short and blunt with an almost power violence edge but not sucky

Wild Moth - "Over, Again"

http://wildmoth.bandcamp.com

Intrinsically catchy garage rock somewhat in the vein of Dinosaur Jr but without solos and a bit more shoey

Weekend Nachos - "Still" LP

http://weekendnachos.bandcamp.com/album/still

A damn good bare bones cut throat hardcore album....raw fast and real

God's America - "Our Bones Will Be Bleached By The Sun" EP

http://a389recordings.bandcamp.com/album/a389-119-gods-america-our-bones-will-bleach-in-the-sun-7

Short fast stupid but somehow good power violence that reminds me of Code 13 and Waco Fuck...from Las Vegas

Brutal Truth/Bastard Noise - "The Axiom of Post Inhumanity" (digital version)

http://brutaltruthbastardnoise.bandcamp.com/album/the-axiom-of-post-inhumanity

Perhaps the most engagingly abrasive album I've ever listened to...bizarre but enthralling....somehow they make noise sound like a jungle....I've read some negative reviews of this and I just think they don't get it....brutal.

Smashing Pumpkins - "Siamese Dream"

http://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL487C1962E03BFA9E

The album that shot my childhood favorite into superstardom because it is so fully addicting

PORTAL - "Vexovoid"

http://profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.com/album/vexovoid

I'm not sure if this is a djent-inspired black metal band or an blackened djent metal band but whatever the fuck this band is going for is like the heaviest most badass thing I've ever heard

Listen to this album

Blondie - "Parallel Lines"

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=96qnW-N3fyI

Without a doubt one of the greatest rock n roll albums that has ever existed. Beyond just classic.

end of the summer - "Three" EP

This is my acoustic project which I have not put online yet. I love it.

Black Sabbath - "13"

http://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm6cT6sn3c3fbKaqTC3iVkgo3N6E49Uen

This album has all the telltale staleness of an old-guy album and yet also this strange biting pull that I cannot deny. This is Black fucking Sabbath after all and they do seem to have had some vigor when they went into this...If anything, their age is actually important to what this album is about, which appears to be their dismay at what their legacy has become or the things they inadvertently influenced (I.e. all metalheads)

Craven Idol - "Towards Eschaton"

http://darkdescentrecords.bandcamp.com/album/towards-eschaton

Debut album by a badass UK blackened death metal with elements of thrash and - gasp - humor thrown in

The Gravitys - "Bring You Down"

http://thegravitys.bandcamp.com/album/the-gravitys-bring-you-down-not-punk-session-7

This is my band. This is a live session in a warehouse and we were all hungover and at first I didn't want to release this at all because I thought it sucked so damn bad but its turned out some people enjoy it and really that means more than what I think

Jethro Tull - "Bursting Out" live album

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/live-bursting-out/5019081

Man these motherfuckers are tight as fuck

Crisis Arm - "Junk Drawer" cassette

http://crisisarm.bandcamp.com/album/junk-drawer

Hauntingly pretty but also harsh shogaze/dream pop from Helmet...These guys are my close close friends and I actually do a spoken word piece that's placed in the middle of the album and the first time I listened to this I forgot I had done it and all the sudden in the feedback there's my voice.....bizarrrrre

51d - S/T cassette

http://951dahomies.bandcamp.com

Solid odd-punk from Riverside

The Coltranes - "Sessions of Terror and Piss"

http://notpunk.bandcamp.com/album/the-coltranes-sessions-of-terror-and-piss-not-punk-session-6

A live session album that I was present at for the recording, and this shit kills everybody else because this is The Coltranes

The Rival Mob - "Mob Justice" LP

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NDPhtN4VxOQ

Boston tough guy hardcore, bass-driven the way Cro-Mags are bass-driven. Cool stuff.

Zoom - 2012 Demo

http://zoomdc.bandcamp.com/album/zoom-demo-2013

Quality DC hardcore

The Down House - 2-song demo

http://thedownhouse.bandcamp.com

Shoegaze/grunge-ish mid-paced rock

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

Trudgers - "Stag at the Social" cassette

http://www.discogs.com/Trudgers-Stag-At-The-Social/release/2466716

Lo-fi and kinda uninteresting sludge-indie from 2009 Murrieta

Apathean - "Eve"

http://apathean.bandcamp.com/album/eve

Dirge-ish, complicated but listenable alternative metalcore that is extremely difficult for me to write about

Tuesday, December 3, 2013

Chasms - "Riser" EP

http://chasmssf.bandcamp.com/

Spooky synth-beat-driven semi-goth songs from a girl in San Francisco

Pity Sex - "Feast Of Love"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz2Q_NifmpU

Highly listenable fuzzed-out dream-pop that reminds me of The Breeders at times and although this probably wasn't what the band was going for and may be the result of my close friends playing them so much but there's even a Weezer type directness with the riffage..Cool bass parts, male and female alternating vocals, and just a really good quick album

Seizures - "The Sanity Universal"

http://seizures.bandcamp.com/album/the-sanity-universal-2013

Intense alternative hardcore in the vein of Converge but even more jarring and with an atmospheric touch that is interesting the entire listen through...some very cool guitar work and on the whole a very "full" full-length album from these OC dudes...there's really a lot going on here...highly recommended
